Winner of a Design Evanston Award for excellence in renovation, The Varsity earned additional recognition at the recent Chicago Commercial Real Estate Awards—as one of five finalists in the Adaptive Reuse of the Year category. The Varsity project created 35 architecturally distinctive apartments within an historic, Illinois movie palace, built in 1926 and closed as a theatre in 1980. Work preserved many original details and included ground-floor retail and restaurant space stretching into Bookman’s Alley—an art, entertainment, and gathering place. DMA supported the remodeling effort as a project manager and investor. The Chicago Commercial Real Estate Awards recognize outstanding achievement in the commercial real estate industry and benefit the greater Chicago Food Depository. Hosted by ARCO Murray, the contractor for the project, DMA team members attended the 37th annual event with our partners at The Salt Shed on April 23, 2025.
